Pamukkale & Hierapolis

Above the calcite hill of Pamukkale is the ancient city of Hierapolis - a little like Ephasis.  This place has a very large Hellenistic Theatre.  It was founded in 190 BC, has a Pagan,  Roman, Jewish, Christian elements. After a number of earthquakes the place was abandoned in 1334.
I think this is a tomb

Can you make out Medusa - she in a common image on these old ruins.

Famous statue of the ancient leader of the Geckostians Emperor Ergunest.  Surprisingly still in reasonably condition after 2000 years...

Evidence of Roman archetecture (as they were experts at the arch)

Marble roads still in great condition

In between showers, time for a photo of some of the group.

The Godesses

and then on to the travertines of white and blue pools

Amazing how plants are able to grow in such a landscape.

We are now off to Fethiye (on the south coast of Turkey) to see the mediteranean and go to the beach - that will be in the next post.
